1940s Spirit of Wartime Sherwood Forest 2025

On the 10th and 11th of May 2025, I headed over to Thoresby Hall in Nottinghamshire for the 1940s Spirit of Wartime Sherwood Forest event — and what a weekend it was!

The weather was on our side (apart from a bit of wind that kept us all on our toes), and the crowds were buzzing with energy right from the start. It was great to see so many people turning out, from families enjoying a day out to history enthusiasts and fellow reenactors.

This was a particularly special event for me, as it was my first ever outing with my WW2 US War Correspondent display — complete with my 1943 Ford GPW, tent, tarp, and militaria pieces. I was honestly blown away by how much interest it attracted. Talking to people, sharing stories, and seeing their genuine curiosity made all the hard work worthwhile.

The wider event had a bit of everything:

  • Living history displays from the British, German, American, and French Resistance, each bringing their corner of the 1940s to life.

  • A dramatic battle reenactment over the bridge, which had the crowds completely hooked.

  • Period music drifting through the weekend, adding that authentic atmosphere.

  • A moving commemoration service on the Sunday morning, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day — a moment that really brought home why we do what we do.

And to top it all off? A Spitfire flyover that had everyone stopping in their tracks and looking to the skies. You just can’t beat that sound.

For me, the 1940s Spirit of Wartime Sherwood Forest event was the perfect mix of education, entertainment, and remembrance. Whether you’re a family looking for a fun and meaningful day out, a history buff keen to soak up some detail, or a reenactor wanting to connect with the community, I can’t recommend it enough.

I’ll definitely be back next year — and hopefully with an even bigger and better display!
